Talk by Mr. Barry Torrens on 'Climbing Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc'

Club President Gordon Ward welcomed members and special guests, our speakers' wife and children, who had not heard the full story of their Dads' epic adventure. The President then introduced our speaker for the morning Mr. Barry Torrens, who told us all about his determination to raise money for Cancer Research UK and his climbing Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc. With the talk Barry had a spectacular PowerPoint show of his achievements - mainly taken on his mobile phone, so he didn't have to worry about taking a heavy camera along!

Talk by Club Member Ian Murray on 'The Walk of 1000 Men'

Club President Gordon Ward welcomed members to the meeting and then introduced our speaker for the morning Club Member Ian Murray. Ian's talk was about taking part in 'The Walk of 1000 Men', which took place in Cornwall last summer. Ian then somewhat took the members by surprise when he began by performing an impromptu 'striptease' - taking off his jacket and shirt to revile his walking 'Tee Shirt' and it's 'Trough Faith Missions' logo (TFM), which was central to the talk all the members went on to enjoy.

Talk by Prof. Harry McMahon on 'Art, Statistics and the Troubles'

New Club President Gordon Ward welcomed club members and guest John Springhall to this first meeting of his Presidential year, on a fine sunny morning. Gordon then introduced our speaker for the morning Prof. Harry McMahon, who gave a fascinating and unusual talk on 'Art, Statistics and the Troubles'.
Harry taught Physics in Grosvenor High School and Methody in the early years of his career before taking a Masters Degree in Education at Leicester University. He then joined the staff of the New University in Coleraine where, in time he became head of the Education Department until his retirement. In starting his talk, Harry told us about his childhood and earlier work years. Even when quite young, Harry found himself regularly at the interface between the two communities in Northern Ireland. This position has had a major influence on his later life and his unique perspective of art.
