Talk by Rev. Brian Howe on ‘A Change of Life’

Members convened as usual in the Upper Room in Portstewart Golf Club. President John Graham introduced the speaker for today Rev. Brian Moore Howe. Brian was born in Kesh Co Fermanagh to Canon Rex and Mary Howe, the second child of a family of four. His father moved to Rossory Parish, on the outskirts of Enniskillen, finishing his primary education there and then on to Portora Royal School. On leaving school he joined the Provincial Bank of Ireland and after six years married and moved to the Bank of Montreal in Edmonton Alberta Canada (having had enough of the 'TROUBLES' - literally being blown out of bed by an IRA bomb!!).

In Canada attended the University of Alberta and studied for RIA (Registered Industrial Accounting) qualifications. Moved to Vancouver where his first child (a daughter) was born. Returned to Northern Ireland after 5 years and rejoined his old bank now the Allied Irish. Appointed Manager in Antrim in 1980. After further moves in N I, Eire and London appointed Regional Manager in the the North located in Coleraine. Worked with the AIB group in Poland for 2 years but life took a downturn and he got divorced.

With the encouragement of Patrick Rooke of Agherton Parish Church Portstewart spent a couple of months in the Sudan and Kenya. On deciding to enter the church and after four years of study became an ordained minister in the Church of Ireland. Now happily remarried Brian is working as a curate in Ballymoney Parish.

Norman Gallagher in proposing the vote of thanks congratulated Brian on his talk which had been not only enjoyable but had been open, frank and refreshingly honest. This was duly passed on by the President.
