Attendance
: 42 members were in attendance.

Apologies: Joe Alcorn, Eric Fulton, Graham Kane, Danny Kennedy, John McKegney, Des Moore, James Nesbitt, Billy Platt, Ernest Preece and John White. (10)

The President, Mike Turner, welcomed members to the meeting. He then introduced this morning’s speaker, Professor Dr. John Thompson, the topic of his talk being “The Importance of Humanities Today.”

Humanities is the studies intended to provide general knowledge and intellectual skills as opposed to occupational or professional skills. It is the branch of learning that includes the arts, classics, religious studies, philosophy and history but not the sciences. Professor Thompson studied English and Medieval Studies and his talk certainly confirmed the importance of Humanities as a tool to analyse the faults of past history in an effort to visualise a clearer and better picture of the future.

A question and answer session followed the presentation. A summary of this talk is available in the speaker’s record book and here on the club website.

A vote of thanks proposed by Jim Donaghy was passed to John by the President. The members showed their appreciation of a most informative talk.
