Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club


Attendance: 34 members and one guest were present ; Guest – John Springhall.

The Club President, John Graham, welcomed members and one guest to the meeting. He then introduced our speaker for the morning, Mr. Ken Ward, the topic of his talk being “The First World War – Aspects of Propaganda”.
Ken gave an interesting and informative lecture illustrating the power of propaganda and how posters and pamphlets were used to bolster public morale during the Great War years.
The presentation concluded with a question and answer session.

A vote of thanks proposed by Reggie Patterson was passed on to Mr. Ward by the President.
The members showed their appreciation.

Minutes: The minutes of the 3rd February 2015, were read, agreed and signed by the President.

REPORTS:
Social: Joe Alcorn reminded members that the club lunch will be held next week on Tuesday 24 February and meal orders should be given to him after today’s meeting.
Welfare: Cecil Spotten in reporting said he was glad to see that Dermot Jennings has recovered from his minor accident. Jim Foote is residing with his daughter and is progressing well after his stay in hospital. Norman Irwin is incapacitated with the flu virus.
Treasurer: Nigel Semple thanked all the members who have now paid the membership subscription for the current year.
A O B: 1. NOTICE OF NEW MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS
The following proposals were made:
John McHenry proposed John Springhall, Seconded by Reggie Patterson
Norman Gallagher proposed Brian Green, Seconded by Nigel Semple
Joe Alcorn proposed Jim Donaghy, Seconded by John McHenry
All proposals were agreed by the members present and we look forward to welcoming the new members.

Next Speakers Meeting: Will be held on Tuesday 3 March and the speaker will be Mr Stewart Tosh on the topic “The History of Policing in Ireland – Myth, Legend or Lies”.

In conclusion the President quoted from the Chinese Philosopher Mencius “If your mind becomes calm, you can think in front of a tiger and if you can think in front of a tiger, you will surely succeed”.

The President thanked the members and guest for attending and hoped that everyone would be at our next meeting.

Meeting closed at 12.00 noon.
