Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club
Attendance: 32 members were in attendance.
Apologies: (10) Norman Gallagher, Jack Henderson, Hammy Houston, Cecil Leitch, John McKegney, Jerry Sayers, Ahmed Sharieff, John Tan, Mike Turner and Derick Woods.
The President, Des Moore said he was delighted that Reggie Patterson and Des Johnston were in attendance and recovering from serious illnesses. He then welcomed members to this, the first meeting of the Autumn session. A special welcome was given to visitors John Christy and Bob, a friend of Ian Murray, from Mid Wales. Bob was asked to convey greetings from Coleraine Probus to his own Probus Club in Wales.
The President then introduced this morning's speaker, Stephen Vandevyver the topic of his talk being "Eye Care".
Stephen was born in Belfast, his father being Belgian and his mother Northern Irish from Portrush.

An enthusiastic question and answer session followed. A vote of thanks, proposed by Jim Archer, was passed to Stephen by the President. The members showed their appreciation of an interesting and informative talk.

1. ADVANCE NOTICE; COUNTERPOINT WITH GUESTS. See flyer on signing in table for full details.
2. PROBUS ALL IRELAND RALLY; The President thanked Graham Kane and his wife Jo for representing the Club at the All Ireland Rally in Tralee. Graham reported that 300 delegates attended the Rally in May 2018 and he was surprised to learn that in Tralee there are nine Probus Clubs. The rally was enjoyable with a good spirit and excellent entertainment.
3. 30th ANNIVERSARY LUNCH. The sub-committee met during the Summer break and after a lengthy discussion it was agreed that the Anniversary lunch be combined with the Christmas Lunch and Entertainment on Tue.11th Dec. The Committee will meet on Tuesday 18th September to finalise the details. The Club Buffet Lunch will take place at The Lodge Hotel on Tue.30th October.
4.ULSTER GLIDING CLUB. 33 members spirits were not dampened by the weather prospects and our special club outing on the 19th June to the U.G.C. turned out to be an interesting, enjoyable and entertaining day with Joe Alcorn surprising all by taking to the sky without an engine. The visit concluded with a sumptuous BBQ which was enjoyed by all the members. For a full report and photographs see the Club Website.
5. CLUB AWAY DAY on 25th September 2018 to Garvagh Museum. Wives and guests may be invited. (Head count to be taken next week)
6. Des Johnston thanked all members who assisted him in any way during his time of illness.
7. PROBUS MAGAZINE Ken Parkes informed members that the Autumn 2018 edition is available at the signing in table. Our Club is again featured in this edition. A small contribution to cover postage charges would be appreciated. Back numbers are also available. Ken encouraged members to support the magazine. Without this the magazine will have to be cancelled.
Next Meeting: The next speakers meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th September 2018 in Portstewart Golf Club when Ken Ward's subject will be "50 Years of The University of Ulster"
Closing Remarks: The President thanked members for attending and looked forward to seeing them at the next meeting.
