Speaker for 21st February 2017

President Mike Turner congratulates club member Norman Gallagher, with members Des Johnston (L) and John White (R)

Pt1. Down under with Norman
After the President, Mike Turner, welcomed members to the meeting, he introduced Club Member Norman Gallagher, our speaker for the day with a “ New Zealand Journey."

Norman’s presentation not only entertained the members but would certainly have impressed the New Zealand Tourist Board. Commencing the 1800 mile journey in the north of North Island we were transported on a journey through stunning landscapes of lush green pastures, picturesque lakes, magnificent seascapes, deep caves, waterfalls, pancake rocks, volcanic cones, towering mountains and glaciers, all admirably illustrated by Norman’s photographs. The journey was completed at the southern tip of South Island. Along the way we learned of the first settlers, the three capital cities Russell Island, Auckland and finally Wellington made capital in 1865. Interesting references were made to the ancient Kauri tree, the Maori feast, “The Lord of the Rings trilogy,” War Memorials, Captain Charles Upton, his VC and bar, Dunedin and the statue of Robbie Burns. Thank you Norman for an amazing presentation.

Pt2. Coleraine Probus goes down under

This week Coleraine Probus members took a trip to New Zealand, courtesy of Norman Gallagher, as he recounted this recent journey to both North and South islands of that distant country. Norman had always been fascinated with New Zealand. As a child at school he liked to draw and copy maps, and the one he drew best was the furthest away of all.

Taking the opportunity of ‘a holiday of a lifetime’ Norman and his wife Hilary set off to explore New Zealand from the very top of North Island to the toe of South Island. And what a trip he had, covering nearly 3000 miles, collecting hundreds of beautiful photos* and returning with many precious memories and tales to tell.

Norman’s travelogue talk and slide show to the club members was received with a certain amount of envy and had everyone thinking they should be contacting their travel agents – although most were a little unsure about the bungee jumping, white water rafting and the sand ‘snow boarding’!
