President Graham Kane introduced Sir Robin Masefield the speaker for the day. Sir Robin, who before his retirement had been the Director of the N.I. Prison Service proceeded to give a fascinating and most informative talk, using a power point presentation on Grey Point Fort.

Talk by Chris Wilson, based around ‘The U.S. War Dead Cemetery’

Club President Graham Kane welcomed members and special guest Peter FitzGerald to the meeting. The President then introduced our speaker for the morning, Chris Wilson, who entertained the members for the next 45 minutes with a wide-ranging talk and PowerPoint presentation, loosely based around the U.S. War Dead Cemetery in N.I. However, Chris began his talk with a short history of undertakers in Belfast, the birth of the 'Independent Unionist Party' and how he came to be brought up by his Uncle and Aunt. Then going on the main talk and PowerPoint presentation itself, starting with a press photo of the first American soldier to arrive in Belfast. This gave Chris the opportunity to tell of some of his earliest memories of life in Belfast and his recollections of the troop arrivals.

Talk by Norman Irwin - 'Part 2 of Wartime Memories - The North African Dessert'

Our newly elected President Graham Kane welcomed members to the meeting and then introduced our speaker for the morning, club member Norman Irwin, who gave an excellent talk, which were the second part of his wartime memories. Norman began his talk with a short reminder of where he had got up to in Part One of his World War Two experiences. This had began with the general call-up in 1939 and culminated with being sent to North Africa for training in 1942 - and looking around, he realised that with all the young faces, not everyone in the room had been born then!
