Talk by Dr. Scott White on ‘What is a Chiropractor’

President Graham Kane introduced Dr. Scott White, our speaker for the day, who was accompanied by his wife Cynthia. Scott is an experienced Chiropractor and is based in Ballymoney.

Scott began his talk with a short explanation of his personal history form his early years growing up in the USA, his training and how he came to make Ballymoney his home. From there he went on give his definition of 'Health' and Chiropractic help. He then wanted to ask, just what does 'good health' mean? For Scott, it's relative depending on what individuals perceive. What everyone has in common, is that their bodies heal themselves. What controls that, for the Chiropractor, is the nervous system and our brain.

Scott sees his job as acting as a middle man, to adjust the body to adjust the nerves and correct the 'subluxations' which give raise to the patients health problem.

** An excellent leaflet provided by Dr White is attached to the notes in the ’Speakers Record Book’ (see Secretary). This explains terms, treatments and problems more fully, and is the basis of his talk (Click this link to view the leaflet). Scott also provided details of his web site, which contains over 300 pages of more detailed information about the world of Chiropractic care - see www.whitechiro.co.uk ** (Click the link to view this in a new window. Scott went on to give a short distinction between 'Enhancement' Chiropractors (that help improve sports etc performance) and 'Treatment' Chiropractors (the work to put right and repair problems in the nervous system).

The talk concluded with an extended and highly interesting question and answer session. Among the questions were:- 'what about Cancer and Moto neuron problems - can't 'cure' these, but can help build up defense and coping mechanisms. 'do you believe in conventional medicine' - yes. And 'do you get clients that see this as a last resort when other medics don't work' - yes, about 80% of clients.

The talk then finished with a 'free' raffle - the winner being Mervyn Patterson, and his prize was and introduction/assessment visit to the clinic, plus a treatment session with Dr. White. We look forward to hearing Mervyn's assessment of his prize, should he take advantage of the win!?

The vote of thanks was proposed by Jim Foote who congratulated Scott on his talk which had been both very enjoyable and most informative, never has there been a better example of 'you learn something new every day' as the talk today. The thanks were duly passed on by the President.
